The Art Club created felted animals thanks to the Greenville Educational Foundation. Each club member received a kit containing tools, materials, and instructions. The students then used their creativity to bring the animals to life. It was amazing to watch the creation from wool to animal over several weeks. Each student's animal became unique to them as they worked. All members of the Art Club were excited about the result and to take them home and show them off.

On a beautiful October, Friday, the Drawing and Painting, Photo, Ceramics, Drawing Design Production, and IB Visual arts class traveled to Strom King Art Center. The students were all given a tour of part of the very large sculpture park. During this time the docent brought the groups to a work of art and engaged the students with questions about the work of art. Then the docent shared background information on the artist, work of art medium, and concepts of the pieces.
The students then were able to explore some nearby sculptures before we met for lunch. Students took interesting and beautiful photos of what they saw. All students wished we could have stayed longer and shared that they would like to go back for a longer visit. |
Thank you to Mr. Meredith for all of the photos.

As a commotion of the year IB Art, Latin, Musica, and Spanish classes all took a trip to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. For most students, this was their first time visiting the museum and even New York City. All students were inspired and awed by the works of art and artifacts they saw. Multiple students reported that is “the best field trip,” and “I am so inspired to create after seeing everything here!”
The Metropolitan Museum of Art was a perfect way to end the year for all of these classes because of the history that the museum offers. There is Art from around the world thought out history. The Art, Latin, and Spanish IB students were able to see the works of art they covered in class. Additionally, there are historical musical instruments that are stunningly created throughout history for Music students to study and apsheat. Due to the success of the trip, we hope to bring make it an annual part of the curriculum. |
This year's amazing yearbook cover was created by Eddie Ross. Eddie worked in Art Club and during his free time with colored pencils to create the design for the yearbook cover. He paid close attention to perspective, details, and color to make the cover accurate and visually interesting. Nice work Eddie!

The body of work will sometimes change drastically and other times alined with the student's original idea. Here are the 2022 graduating senior's exhibitions. |

After much careful planning and preparation Greenville is ready to have students back in the classrooms. The classrooms and schedules look different than years past but the art making, creative thinking, and planning are still here. This year students will be making projects at home and in the classroom. We will also be testing out some new mediums to help keep us all connected to one another and making unique works of art.

Museums are challenging people to recreate a work of art using only people and/or objects found around their homes. The stay-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic have made everyone more acquainted with their living spaces than they ever thought they would be and a little silly.
Greenville School District is jumping on the trend! As some of you may know this Ms. DellaRocco has been having students try this out in her photo class, each year the artwork made from those projects show off students creativity and humor. Not only are students trying their hand at this but some are the Greenville teachers and staff. Let's all celebrate and make art together from our homes. You can try and recreate it as closely as possible, add humorous substitutions for objects(or even people) or put a COVID-19 spin on a famous work of art. Give this a try and feel free to share it with me or tag GCSartroom on Instagram! |

Congratulations to Colby Klob, Sierra Mistler and Kaitlyn Slik for being selected to be a part of the 21st High School Juried Regional Art Show. This is a highly prestigious Art show. Judges selected 108 works of art from the 500 pieces submitted from 22 schools. This year the show could not be held in person but the Opalka Gallery has created a Virtual Opening & Awards Ceremony to share and celebrate these young artists.
Colby is a junior who took Digital Photography during the fall semester. His work of art is a photo he took while in that class. His photo Three Dimensional Value Scale was from a project where the students need to take photos of the world around them. Their challenge was to make the image abstract and focus on the elements and principles of art taking it out of the context we typically see the subject matter in. Sierra Mistler is a senior and is a student in the IB Visual Art class. This year Sierra has been creating artwork that brings awareness to the effects that humans are having on the planet. Her video 58.62 Degrees Fahrenheit brings the viewer's attention to the rising temperature of our planet and the effects that this phenomenon is having. Kaitlyn Silk is also a senior who is an IB Visual Art student. Kaitlyn has been focusing her work on the emotions and how to visually represent a variety of them. For her video Reincarnation, she created a clay flower and submerged it in water. Due to the fact this clay piece was not fired it slowly melted away. Kaitlyn filmed this process and then took the footage and reversed it, creating a time-lapse that gives the viewer a sense of hope. If you would like to see the artwork created by our Greenville students and the other students who are part of the 21st High School Juried Regional Virtual Opening and Award Ceremony the information is below. |

Students have the opportunity to create a project that they would like to pursue independently. Morgan decided that she wanted to continue to develop her artist's thinking and skills. She researched a variety of the artist and developed the projects she would complete over the course of a year.
Morgan has completed a very detailed painting based on the artwork of Georga O'Keeffe. She took the photos and then used the grid method to break the image up to accurately obtain proportions and values. Morgan is now working on a two-part project, creating a collage from found images then breaking it down into positive and negative space and cutting it out of black paper. Stay tuned for her next project! |
The Greenville art students traveled to Massachusetts to visit the Clark Art Institute to study and experience art in real life. The group began their visit with a tour led by the Clark's docent. The docent focused on a variety of works from different time periods. The students then had an opportunity to explore the gallery on their own and find artworks that they found inspirational. They had a great time and gained a greater appreciation for art.
Check out some photos of the museum taken by the Photography class students by clicking here. |

Thank you to the Greenville Education Foundation for the bookmaking kits. Bookmaking requires several different materials and tools, therefore a kit is the best way to get everything that is needed to make a book. The Greenville Education Foundation was extremely generous and purchased enough for every student in the upper-level classes to make a book. The students enjoyed the experience of learning a new art skill and have a usable end product. Many students stated using them as sketch books right away.

Way to go first time ever IB SL art students! Cole Ackerman, Nadia Boyea, Nicole Torrey, and Hailey Sarsfield completed the challenging requirements of the International Bacheletory Visual Arts Criteria. Each student needed to create a unified body of art work, document their proccess and ideas in a Visual Arts Journal. They also had to create a research presentation comparing three different works of art from diverse cultures and time periods.
The Exhibition required that each student have four to eight works of art set up in a logical and aesthetically pleasing way. In addition, the students needed to write an artist statement for each piece and an explanation of what they were trying to communicate with their viewers. To see their artwork check out the IB Visual Arts page. |

Eight Greenville students were invited to attend a day at the Rensselaerville Huyck Preserve where they learned about illustrating nature, the environment around the facility and wild birds that were rehabilitated.
The students started their day with a breakfast snack by the research pond and then got to work. They were learning about how to verbally and visually communicate with drawing exercises. They then went for a hike and focused on the importance of observation all the different microcosms around the research pond. The students then worked with Sandy Orris, a retired Greenville teacher, botanist and scientific illustrator. The afternoon was spent drawing predator bird and getting the feeling for quick drawing quick sketches of live animals. |

Art Club has been helping prepare for the High School Musical, Cinderella. The Art Club helped create the setting of a busy marketplace by creating fully-frosted pastel three tiered cakes, ham, sausage links and packages. Each of the props needed to look believable from the audience and kept held up to dance. The Art Club members had creative solutions for all props and helped to complete the magic of the show.

Mr. Karle: “When your child is born, it is both a new life in the sense of a new person that never existed before, but also a new life for you. It is as though the life you had before was actually a past life. So, my fear is that if a child of mine died, I would lose, both their life and my new life. Now, I have four children, and I fear that I would have to figure out how to function for the children that remain if I lost one."
|
Courtney: “I’m not actually scared of space itself, just the fact that it's so big and there's so much we don't know.”
|
Mrs. Finch: “I am afraid of birds, especially when they are flying around my head! I attribute my fear to a visit to the Burnett Park Zoo in Syracuse. I was 2 and was bitten by a flamingo that I decided to try to feed through the fence.

"I thought of this project one night before falling asleep and quickly wrote it down in my phone notes before it was forgotten. The main goal of this project was to get people I am close with, people I am acquaintances with and people I hardly know to share one of their biggest fears with me. I reached out in person and on social media for participants and everyone involved was a volunteer, some however needed to see what others images looked like to feel comfortable about sharing their own fear. I understand that what I asked was a lot of someone who didn’t know me well. Some fears were deeper and more meaningful, making it a more personal experience for some, while for others it wasn’t a big deal and their biggest fear was simple. The reason behind projecting the picture onto the person rather than just having them stand next to it or somehow merging just a plain picture into an image of their fear is because if you fear something, it’s part of you. You can’t get rid of your biggest fear, you only learn to cope with it. In most cases this is in ways that make it as avoidable as possible. Learning to live with a fear is something difficult to deal with, it interferes with your life at some point and can make it harder to enjoy things if you’re constantly thinking about whatever you fear.
To sum it up, the projection of the fear is to represent the fact that yes, you have this fear, but it isn’t all of you and it most certainly doesn’t define you or how you choose to live your life. I think that overall this project was a success and many people got excited when seeing my final choice of image (especially after it was edited and printed) making it rewarding for me to see that they felt I portrayed their fear accurately." |
Students from the high, middle and elementary schools hopped on a bus and traveled across the river to visit Olana and The Thomas Cole House. There they learned about the owners of the homes, architecture, the historical time period and discussed the art work that was on display. At both locations all students and teachers took out their sketch books and practiced their plein air drawing skills. The day we went to Olana was the first time they allowed photos to be taken of the inside of the home. Many students were thrilled to have this opportunity
