Juried High School Student Art Show 2029

Congratulations to Priscilla Cummings and Kirah Sickles, who were selected to represent Greenville at the Juried High School Students' Art Show at Columbia-Greene Community College. The show celebrated the young artists in our local community from several regional high schools. Priscilla's and Kirah's work was selected to represent our school because of their creativity, skill work with tedious mediums and/or techniques, as well as dedication to creating a truly unique work of art.
The show will be on display from February 5th through February 27th in the Foundation Gallery at Columbia-Greene Community College.

Art Club Tie-Dye

Picture
The High School Art Club was excited to tie-dye! For many of them, it was their first try working in this medium. The club members who had experience shared what they had been successful with in the past, and then we got to work! The student had a blast creating t-shirts and tote bags with bold and bright colors.

A big thank you to the Greenville Education Foundation, which helped make this collaboration and fun activity possible. At the end of the meeting, the students took home what they created. Several of the club members said it was the best activity we did all year. If you see a student with a tie-dye bag or shirt, ask if they made it!

2025-2026 Yearbook Covers

There are all kinds of art careers and forms of art in our contemporary visual world. Traditionally, these classes, Drawing and Painting, and Advanced Studio art, have focused on the classic forms of art making, but we mixed it up this year and tried out illustration/graphic design, and created yearbook covers. The classes were given the open-ended challenge of creating a design that could be used as the 2025-2026 Greenville High School yearbook cover. We looked at covers that had been selected in past years by the student body and why they may have been selected. We talked about image, color, and font, as well as graphic design terms like bleed lines, layers, and templates.
All students came up with unique designs using the mediums and subject matters that they felt would make a winning cover.

Check out the designs these talented students came up with. How can you pick just one?!

Students, look in your email for a form to vote on your favorites.

Art Club Mini Holiday Paintings

Picture
Over the last two weeks in Art Club, we played holiday music and created tiny, festive paintings. Each student came up with their own image that they wanted to use for their paintings. For a final touch on some, we watered the paint down and flicked white paint over the images to give the feeling of snow falling. All the Art club members were excited to bring their tiny paintings home as gifts for their family and friends.

Holiday Glow

Over the past two weeks, the drawing prompt for the advanced Art classes was "Holiday Glow." The students could use any medium that they felt would make their choice of subject matter feel festive. They all had different ideas of how to show off their holiday spirit. How can you show off your creativity and holiday spirit in a work of art?

Fall Paper Cutouts

Picture
Ms. DellaRocco was feeling festive and designed a small, fun fall project for the  Studio Art classes.

The students were already familiar with the artwork of Henri Matisse, focusing on his abstracted and colorful paper cut-out artworks.  Using only paper, the students needed to create a fall object. The project allowed for a wide variety of choices, creativity, and collaboration. The works of art are on display outside the art room, brightening the hallway and people's days. It seems like the perfect time to share them with you as we celebrate Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Studio Art class! There are so many tasty-looking pies, and who can say no to a pumpkin-flavored tea or coffee?

Pumpkins & Skulls

Ms. DellaRocco was feeling festive and really wanted to try out a new material, paper pulp! This very odd matter starts out looking like the lint from your dryer, but when water is added, it becomes a sticky oatmeal-like paste that can be layered and sculpted. The students were both grossed out and intrigued by this new material. There were lots of laughs and "ewws" as the classes created their sculptures.
A big thank you goes out to the Advanced Studio Art class, who helped test out the material to see how it would look and what steps were needed to do done to make the outcomes. Their projects were the examples that the other classes used for inspiration.
Check out all these festive and creative paper purple sculptures and pumpkins, and hope they help get you in the mood for Halloween!

Mini Art Gallery

Picture
Picture
Picture
To start the year off and get all students excited about creating and showing off their style, Ms. DellaRocco had the Drawing and Painting class and the Advanced Studio Art class create a mini work of art. To begin, the students were introduced to a variety of art media, allowing them to test out mediums they had not used before, as well as old favorites. The next step was to select what medium would work best for their tiny work of art vision. Each student created a two-inch by two-inch piece. Some students liked the project so much that they made two or even three!

Then, like any true Art teacher, Ms. DellaRocco felt like we needed to take this project to the next level! The Drawing and Painting class teamed up with Mr. Kerner for an interdisciplinary lesson on how to build frames for their mini works of art. We discussed with Mr. Kerner what we needed and designed a plan for the project. The class traveled to the Technology room, where we all received a lesson on saw safety, how to operate the table saw, and how to assemble each mini frame. The class truly enjoyed the lesson and time in the shop, making each of the frames fit their works of art.

The last step is to hang them up, but these amazing mini works of art would get lost in our large display cases. Next challenge for the students: create a mini gallery to hang your works of art in. And so the students begin building mini galleries.
The students were responsible for creating all parts of the lesson. This opportunity helped the students see how practicing arts work with others, that there are many pieces and parts to the art world, and how all different skills can be used to create

Class of 2025 Senior Mural

Picture
The class of 2025 voted, and Julia H.'s design was selected to be the senior mural. The design depicted a dandelion in its final stage, with all of the seeds flying away and out into the world. The image spoke to the class as they were all leaving high school for new adventures. Noah F. and Naudiyah S. lent their skill and creativity to complete the mural. Congratulations, class of 2025!

IB MET Trip

Picture
On a beautiful Monday in June, the IB Art, Latin, Music, and Spanish students took a field trip to the New York Metropolitan Museum. The students and the teachers were all looking forward to the trip. Many students had never been to the Met Museum before, and they were eager to explore and see both art and history.
It is incredible to walk through the recorded human history of the world condensed in a single building. Everyone was excited to explore and learn.  Each student had a work of art or artifact that they were excited to see in real life and share with their peers.

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who worked hard to make this trip possible; it is something everyone who attended will remember. Here are some statements the students shared about visiting The MET.

Picture
It’s important for students to visit the Met and see artwork in real life because it helps to bring a deeper appreciation for art. P.C.
Picture
Going to the Met allows students to understand artists' perspectives in a meaningful way. It allowed me to walk around and see really unique art pieces.  V.G.
Picture
It is important for students to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and see the artwork in person because some details and emotion can not be captured through screens. In this artwork in particular the deflated effect is incredibly impressive in person. E.S.
Picture
Picture
Students should attend the trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art because seeing works in real life allows you to truly understand them on a deeper level. It allows you to observe them closely and read about both the cultural and historical contexts of the works, as well as how they were made. Furthermore, the museum exposes students to a greater volume of art that may serve as inspiration that you wouldn't have had otherwise.  N.L.
Picture
You get to see all of the detail originally put in and spot little things you likely wouldn’t have noticed otherwise if you were just seeing a photo of it. It’s also amazing being in the room with so many incredible pieces of art that have so much history; That’s not something you can get really anywhere else but in-person places with art like museums.-L.O.
Picture
I took a picture in front of Claude Monet's water lilies. It was fascinating to see the work that I had studied for so long on the computer, in person! N.S.
Picture
The Met allows you to see all the different cultures and learn about them all in one place. T.L.
Picture
Going to the MET provides an unparalleled access to such a large amount of art that greatly expands your ability to understand said artworks in a way that is impossible to achieve without directly seeing the art in person. L.S.

It is amazing to see pieces of art in the Met as it can be hard to visualize the scale that most pieces are.  -C.L.

IB Visual Arts Exhibtions

Cheers to this year's IB Visual Art students who completed the class and submitted to IB. The IB Visual Arts Class is broken down into three components: a research presentation, a journal documenting the process over the class, and an Art exhibition.
The exhibition is one of the most exciting and creative parts of the class, oh, and did I mention a lot of work? At the beginning of the IB Visual Art students' journey, they select a topic that they would like to explore through artwork. Each work of art should relate to this concept. As we get close to submitting to IB, the students selected the works that they felt best represented their concept, skills, and creativity to share with the IB evaluators. Each student's body of work is completely different in ideas, mediums, and processes. When the final exhibition is set up, all the students shine with joy and sigh with relief. This is no easy task, just ask any of them. I am excited and proud to share with you the 2025 IB Visual Art Students' final Art Exhibitions.

Art Club Tie-Dye

Last week, the High School Art club tried their hand at tie-dyeing! For many of them, it was their first try working in this medium. The club members who had experience shared what they had success with in the past, and then we got to work! The student had a blast creating t-shirts and tote bags with bold and bright colors.

Guest Teacher

Picture
Picture
On Monday, the high school Drawing and Painting class had a guest teacher, Elliot, Ms. DellaRocco's son. Earlier this year, in his art class, he learned how to make bunnies out of Model Magic. He loved the project so much he thought everyone in his family how to make them, and then he had a great idea, "I can teach the kids at your school, mommy!"
It was a great idea. After making sure it was okay with Ms. Gogran (who wanted a brush up on her art skills) and waiting for a day when Elliot did not have school, we made it happen. Elliot started the class by learning everyone's name and asking them what color they would like to use. He then gave a step-by-step tutorial on how to build the bunnies. The Greenville students were awesome; they raised their hands to ask questions, worked diligently through the class, and were friendly and kind to their guest teacher.
Check out their creations and the class learning how to make bunnies.

The Met Cloisters

Picture
Where does Art fit into History? Everywhere!

The upper-level Latin classes took a trip to The Met Cloisters in late December on a beautiful sunny day. The students were given a tour of the museum and talked with the docent at great length about Art styles and how they were influenced by Greek and Roman art and architecture. The students were engaged and shared their knowledge. Once the tour was over, we explored the rest of the museum. If you have the chance go check it out!

High School Artist

Art teachers love to see their students work hard and enjoy themselves in art class, but it is even better when studes come up with their own projects. Here are some projects that students came up with on their own and worked on outside of their Art classes. Check out the talent and dedication of our Greenville Artists.

Neurographic Art

To start up the new school year the first week of school the Art classes learned about Neurographic Drawings. This activity is a great way to reflect on how you are feeling, and calm anxiety. It allows students to create something that they can relate to and gives them a creative outlet. The end product is not as important as the process of making the work and reflecting. Give it a try, on here are two videos that describe the process and help guide you!

We are back in school 2020-2021!

After much careful planning and preparation Greenville is ready to have students back in the classrooms. The classrooms and schedules look different than years past but the art making, creative thinking, and planning are still here. This year students will be making projects at home and in the classroom. We will also be testing out some new mediums to help keep us all connected to one another and making unique works of art.

Thank you to everyone who helped the Art Department create this rainbow. Each tiny image that was combined to make this rainbow demonstrates how we are a strong community.

It is time to get creative and take a close look at some amazing works of art!

Museums are challenging people to recreate a work of art using only people and/or objects found around their homes. The stay-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic have made everyone more acquainted with their living spaces than they ever thought they would be and a little silly.
Greenville School District is jumping on the trend! As some of you may know this Ms. DellaRocco has been having students try this out in her photo class, each year the artwork made from those projects show off students creativity and humor.
Not only are students trying their hand at this but some are the Greenville teachers and staff. Let's all celebrate and make art together from our homes. You can try and recreate it as closely as possible, add humorous substitutions for objects(or even people) or put a COVID-19 spin on a famous work of art. Give this a try and feel free to share it with me or tag GCSartroom on Instagram!
See what recreations people all over have done at The Getty(museum that started this trend) #betweenartandquarantine and #tussenkunstenquarantaine.

21st High School Juried Regional Art Show

Check out the entire show at the Opalka Galler Web Page

Congratulations to Colby Klob, Sierra Mistler and Kaitlyn Slik for being selected to be a part of the  21st High School Juried Regional Art Show. This is a highly prestigious Art show. Judges selected 108 works of art from the 500 pieces submitted from 22 schools.  This year the show could not be held in person but the Opalka Gallery has created a Virtual Opening & Awards Ceremony to share and celebrate these young artists.

Colby is a junior who took Digital Photography during the fall semester. His work of art is a photo he took while in that class. His photo Three Dimensional Value Scale was from a project where the students need to take photos of the world around them. Their challenge was to make the image abstract and focus on the elements and principles of art taking it out of the context we typically see the subject matter in.

Sierra Mistler is a senior and is a student in the IB Visual Art class.  This year Sierra has been creating artwork that brings awareness to the effects that humans are having on the planet. Her video 58.62 Degrees Fahrenheit brings the viewer's attention to the rising temperature of our planet and the effects that this phenomenon is having.

Kaitlyn Silk is also a senior who is an IB Visual Art student. Kaitlyn has been focusing her work on the emotions and how to visually represent a variety of them. For her video Reincarnation, she created a clay flower and submerged it in water. Due to the fact this clay piece was not fired it slowly melted away. Kaitlyn filmed this process and then took the footage and reversed it, creating a time-lapse that gives the viewer a sense of hope.
If you would like to see the artwork created by our Greenville students and the other students who are part of the  21st High School Juried Regional Virtual Opening and Award Ceremony the information is below.

Student Project

Students have the opportunity to create a project that they would like to pursue independently. Morgan decided that she wanted to continue to develop her artist's thinking and skills. She researched a variety of the artist and developed the projects she would complete over the course of a year.
Morgan has completed a very detailed painting based on the artwork of Georga O'Keeffe. She took the photos and then used the grid method to break the image up to accurately obtain proportions and values.
Morgan is now working on a two-part project, creating a collage from found images then breaking it down into positive and negative space and cutting it out of black paper. Stay tuned for her next project!

The Clark Art Museum Field Trip

The Greenville art students traveled to Massachusetts to visit the Clark Art Institute to study and experience art in real life. The group began their visit with a tour led by the Clark's docent. The docent focused on a variety of works from different time periods.  The students then had an opportunity to explore the gallery on their own and find artworks that they found inspirational. They had a great time and gained a greater appreciation for art.

Check out some photos of the museum taken by the Photography class students by clicking here.

Bookmaking Kit

Picture
Thank you to the Greenville Education Foundation for the bookmaking kits. Bookmaking requires several different materials and tools, therefore a kit is the best way to get everything that is needed to make a book. The Greenville Education Foundation was extremely generous and purchased enough for every student in the upper-level classes to make a book. The students enjoyed the experience of learning a new art skill and have a usable end product.  Many students stated using them as sketch books right away.

IB SL Visual Art Exhibitions

Way to go first time ever IB SL art students! Cole Ackerman, Nadia Boyea, Nicole Torrey, and Hailey Sarsfield completed the challenging requirements of the International Bacheletory Visual Arts Criteria. Each student needed to create a unified body of art work, document their proccess and ideas in a Visual Arts Journal. They also had to create a research presentation comparing three different works of art from diverse cultures and time periods.
The Exhibition required that each student have four to eight works of art set up in a logical and aesthetically pleasing way. In addition, the students needed to write an artist statement for each piece and an explanation of what they were trying to communicate with their viewers.
To see their artwork check out the IB Visual Arts page.

Art Club

Art Club has been helping prepare for the High School Musical, Cinderella. The Art Club helped create the setting of a busy marketplace by creating fully-frosted pastel three tiered cakes, ham, sausage links and packages. Each of the props needed to look believable from the audience and kept held up to dance. The Art Club members had creative solutions for all props and helped to complete the magic of the show.

Nadia is working on a Student Project and is building her portfoilo working with a mentor. She comes up with the concept, subject matter and mediums of all of her projects. This requires planning, problem solving and dedication. Check out her latest ongoing work of art, Fears Project.

Mr. Karle: “When your child is born, it is both a new life in the sense of a new person that never existed before, but also a new life for you. It is as though the life  you had before was actually a past life. So, my fear is that if a child of mine died, I would lose, both their life and my new life. Now, I have four children, and I fear that I would have to figure out how to function for the children that remain if I lost one."
Courtney: “I’m not actually scared of space itself, just the fact that it's so big and there's so much we don't know.”
Mrs. Finch: “I am afraid of birds, especially when they are flying around my head! I attribute my fear to a visit to the Burnett Park Zoo in Syracuse. I was 2 and was bitten by a flamingo that I decided to try to feed through the fence.

Artist Statement

Picture
"I thought of this project one night before falling asleep and quickly wrote it down in my phone notes before it was forgotten. The main goal of this project was to get people I am close with, people I am acquaintances with and people I hardly know to share one of their biggest fears with me. I reached out in person and on social media for participants and everyone involved was a volunteer, some however needed to see what others images looked like to feel comfortable about sharing their own fear. I understand that what I asked was a lot of someone who didn’t know me well. Some fears were deeper and more meaningful, making it a more personal experience for some, while for others it wasn’t a big deal and their biggest fear was simple. The reason behind projecting the picture onto the person rather than just having them stand next to it or somehow merging just a plain picture into an image of their fear is because if you fear something, it’s part of you. You can’t get rid of your biggest fear, you only learn to cope with it. In most cases this is in ways that make it as avoidable as possible. Learning to live with a fear is something difficult to deal with, it interferes with your life at some point and can make it harder to enjoy things if you’re constantly thinking about whatever you fear.
To sum it up, the projection of the fear is to represent the fact that yes, you have this fear, but it isn’t all of you and it most certainly doesn’t define you or how you choose to live your life. I think that overall this project was a success and many people got excited when seeing my final choice of image (especially after it was edited and printed) making it rewarding for me to see that they felt I portrayed their fear accurately."

At both locations all students and teachers took out their sketch books and practiced their plein air drawing skills. The day we went to Olana was the first time they allowed photos to be taken of the inside of the home. Many students were thrilled to have this opportunity

3D Printer Visits Greenville Art Room

During the month of December the high school students had the opportunity to test out a MakerBot 3D printer. Students could come in outside of class and after school to test out the equipment. Printing was fascinating and groups of students would stop by to see how the technology worked. Most students printed objects that were predesigned by a professional but some students tried their hand at building pieces themselves. Greenville is planing on purchasing a 3D printer in the future, but we are waiting until the technology is perfected.

Army Ceiling Tile

The local Army recruiter requested that all the schools in their district represent themselves with a ceiling tile that they would display in their office. They asked that each school show school spirit and their support for our troops. Matt Hallenbeck, Tristan Marcello, Joel Keeny and Liam Black all worked on the tile in their spare time. Nice job gentlemen, you did a great job.
