Students learned about the Folk Art of the Mexican Oaxacan Animals. Each of these animals is carved and painted entirely by hand and is made of indigenous copal wood. These little sculptures are collected worldwide and can get very expensive.
Students used clay to sculpt their own version of the Oaxacan Animals. Students drew their animals from multiple angles and then planned where they were going to use color and pattern in an interesting way. Once they had their layout finalized, they began applying color to their animals and created these fun works of art. |
The class looked at the artwork of Henry Moore, an English sculptor. Moore is best know for his large abstracted outdoor figures. The class discussed how to simplify a figure and looked at some of Moore's work for guidance. They then got to work mixing plaster and carving away material to form a figure.
