The drape mold process is an easy way to make works of art and usable objects. This technique builds on the hand building techniques that the students have learned in ceramics. Students learned to roll out slabs, and then lay it over a plaster mold. As the clay dried, it took on the shape of the mold.
Each student was required to make their drape mold into a recognizable object that had a function. Students were able to make their projects reflect both their interests and creativity. |
The white and matte images are after the first firing, or the bisque fire. The photos with color and gloss have been glazed and fired for a second time.

Students used the claymation work of Tim Burton as inspiration for a series of three pinch pots monsters. Each pinch pot made had a different size and different characteristics to create their own cast of monsters. The only restriction was that they could not add a face to their pinch pot; they needed to be creative with their creations.

The class learned multiple ways to create objects with the slab building technique. Each student designed a usable cylindrical vessel for their own needs, the students brainstormed different functions and how to design their best vessels. The students also used nature to create a leaf drape dish using slab. Students collected leaves and imprinted them into the clay. The leaves were then cut out of the clay and laid over a dish or drape mold to take on the desired form.
